Benefits of Editing

Editing Benefits

The Editing House
Proofreading & Editing Service

Editing is an essential part of publishing a book and should be done prior to submission to a publisher.

With the best will in the world, everyone knows that you cannot check or proofread your own work. You will always overlook your own mistakes and you will invariably register or read what you want to see, spoiling the intended message.

What are the benefits of getting your work proofread and edited?

Cut out all these exclamation points. An exclamation point is like laughing at your own joke.’

Scott Fitzgerald

Consider the following paragraph:

With the bset will in the wolrd, evreyone knows taht you cannot check or proofread your own work. No matter how many times you read it, you will always ovrelook your own mistkaes and you will invaraibly register or read what you want to see, spoilning the intneded message. The mind automaitcaly sees the first and last letter of each word and if these are corect, the brain tends to automaticaly fill in the blanks, regradless of what is actaully on the page.

If you were able to read this properly, when you read the next passage you will understand why you need an editor. If you look more closely at the first paragraph, you will see that there are quite a few intended mistakes, which your mind may have seen as being correct or, indeed, what it wanted or expected to see. This is what it should have read:

With the best will in the world, everyone knows that you cannot check or proofread your own work. No matter how many times you read it, you will always overlook your own mistakes and you will always register or read what you want to see, spoiling the intended message. The mind automatically sees the first and last letter of each word and if these are correct, the brain tends to automatically fill in the blanks, regardless of what is actually on the page.

You should have been able to read this in just a couple of minutes. That’s what a proofreader or editor does. That’s why you need The Editing House.

Why you need an editor:

  • You do not need to gloss over things with fancy gimmicks to get your manuscript noticed. Fancy fonts, the use of italics, coloured paper, elaborately displayed and flowery text, etc., will only serve to put people off.
  • Writers tend to try to say the same thing several times so that it fills a whole paragraph which is unnecessary. Take these out and it says exactly the same thing without half the words. This is why you need an editor, because they will eliminate waffle and they will make it more concise, unlike this bullet point.
  • It is by no means just a case of enhancing your work – it’s the contents that make the difference and which will achieve the end result of getting your manuscript published and earning you some sort of income. If a publisher sees that they are going to have to do a lot of work to change the formatting, they will take one look at it, see it is overly complicated and reject it immediately.

The Editing House does not want to see this happen, so improve your chances of securing a publishing deal and let us do the work for you.

When you wish to instruct, be brief; that men’s minds take in quickly what you say, learn its lesson, and retain it faithfully. Every word that is unnecessary only pours over the side of a brimming mind.’
